The Ultimate Guide To Savannah: Best Eateries

Writer's picture: Kerry McCarthyKerry McCarthy

I'm back with post number two on the ultimate guide to Savannah. If you missed my first post, talking about the best places to grab a drink be sure to check it out by clicking here. I was so excited to make this post all about where you should grab a bite to eat, but honestly this was a bit tough. Savannah has some pretty amazing restaurants and treats within the city, that I have just begun my quest in eating through the city. With that, I am included some specific restaurants that I have loved, but also included some general areas to venture off to that I continuously try new spots. With each spot I have a general price range, $-$$$, next to it which I calculated based on an average meal cost (which I also included) combined with any additional drinks/goodies you might get. I hope you are ready to get real hungry as you read this guide, enjoy!

Most Important Meal of the Day.....Brunch!

Ordinary Pub-$$ (Brunch: $14 average)

The ordinary pub has a wide variety of options from brunch to dinner, but this has to be my top pick brunch spot and this experience was what sold me to the place. I am the type of person that needs a good coffee and the added bonus of a bunchtime mimosa to get me going. Of course like any good brunch place they have both, PLUS a full brunch cocktail menu. These drinks can rack up some additional cost to your meal, so note that, and maybe the best decision for you is to get their $10 bottomless mimosa. Now I don't want to get too into the drinks as that is what my last post focused on, but my last little tidbit is that you can get your bottomless $10 mimosa to go in a TOGOSA! But lets get to the real topic of conversation, the food. This place has something for whatever type of brunch person you are, from heavier grits, steak and eggs to there own version of avocado toast. I will say if you are looking for simple this is not the place because everything packs a punch and is loaded with flavor. I highly recommend there biscuits and gravy, which is actually an appetizer so you could make it a meal like I did or get it to share so that you can venture into even more delicious food. Given that this place is quiet popular expect a wait on busier weekends, or I suggest making a reservation prior to your trip.

A Place That Has Everything

Barracuda Bob's $-$$$ (Lunch/Dinner: $13-$25 average) **Cory's Favorite

I stumbled upon this place honestly because I was looking for a restaurant with two things: located on River Street and a menu my visiting family could all enjoy. This was a very happy accident, and has been a spot that I keep going back to. For starters...the starters haha. There appetizer list is complied of a few classics, like wings and fries, but what made the experience for me was, in my opinion, the more southern classics like gumbo, peel and eat shrimp, and fried green tomatoes. Remember I am from the midwest, Wisconsin specifically, so this is what I consider Southern flare. So if you are looking for some snacks to share while you take a break from exploring Savannah this is a great spot. But maybe your are in the mood for something a little bigger. Again this place has some of your classics like burgers and signature dishes but what drew me was the seafood. I will say one more time, I'm from Wisconsin, so fresh seafood is not easy to come by and their bucket (literally bucket) of crab has won my heart. Lastly, this has become my boyfriends favorite place as well, and he notes the the grits dish is the best he has ever had. Not to mention each time that I have gone there staff has been incredible and quick. A go-to spot on River Street for me!

Something A little Different

Flying Monkey Noodle Bar-$ (Lunch/Dinner: $10)

This place was recommended to me and my boyfriend the last time we went to savannah, and we were looking for, as this section states, something a little different. After the sun had set in Savannah, and there was a chill in the air we were looking for something to warm us up, and this hit the spot. This place focuses on noodle dishes from asian nations made fresh cut by hand. They do have option for those that are less adventurous and gluten-free (don't worry I looked it up for y'all). Our go to eyes went right to the hot soup dishes when we went but you can also get non soup hot or cold noodle dishes as well. What I also liked about this place is that they have a carry out option, which I saw a lot of people doing as well. So if you want to grab something as you head back home or to your hotel they can do that for you. The place may look like a little hole in the wall but the line out the door proves is a good pick. They are pretty quick with getting people in and out, but also be prepared for possible wait time.

Sweet Treats

Savannah Candy Kitchen-(If you buy in store it is much cheaper, online gets pretty expensive)

If you want to talk about a place that you have to experience, is a Savannah must-see, and all that jazz then you need to stop by the Savannah Candy Kitchen. They have a few locations, that you will for sure smell once you get closer. And if the smell doesn't get you, their free samples of pralines will. These are a classic Georgia staple, that you can't get anywhere else. As noted above, you can actually shop there online store, however when you look into the classics, like the pralines, tins start at around $40. Take a peak but you also might just be torturing yourself. Pralines isn't the only sweet treat that they sell. They are a gourmet candy shop with homemade delights like Carmel apples, fudge, chocolate cover Oreos, and also have a section where you can find all your favorite childhood candies. Each time I'm in a take a peak at their wall of candy that you can fill a bag full of. Lastly, they serve homemade ice-cream that hits the spot. If you don't want to take my word for it, this place has also been featured on the food network, southern living, Rachel Ray, and the list goes on.

Other Places To Check Out

As I have noted with all of these paces the potential of a wait is something to factor in, after all is Savannah. I thought I would Include a few general areas as well as other places to check out that I have tried and are also on the bucket list.

River Street

River Street is a main hub of Savannah, with many shops, restaurants and hotels so more likely then not you will find yourself there. With that being said places can fill up, but my advice is to have back ups and note that if this is the place you are looking at for good seafood many of them will do just the trick. The restaurants also have different deals going on, so it might be worth your time checking out those options as well. Bottomline, wherever you pick you can find some pretty good food and a great view!

Places Around Main Areas

While your sightseeing might gravitate you to some of the more popular places, note that savannah has great restaurant through out the city, not just in those locations. If you want to find a spot that won't be crazy busy, go a few blocks away from those areas along the edge. I personally like exploring Savannah more and going down those side streets, so be sure to take a note of potential good places to go back to for when its time to eat.
